VRINDAVAN: A man, who had been posing as a
CBI officer, has been arrested here on charges of cheating people with offers of a government job. The “fake” CBI officer has been identified as Lav Kumar Pandey of Nirauli Kala in Etah.
Pandey has been lodged in Mathura district jail. The police here arrested him on Saturday evening after receiving several complaints of cheating from victims.
SHO Vrindavan Kotwali Sanjay Jaiswal said: “He (Pandey) had conned several people in Vrindavan. He has been charged under sections 406 (punishment for criminal breach of trust), 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property), 467 (forgery of valuable security, will) and 468 (forgery for purpose of cheating) of the IPC and sent to jail Sunday.”
Police also found in Pandey’s possession several sets of forged documents, letter heads, seals, rubber stamps and identity cards.
A victim Shyam Sundar, who is a resident Shyam Nivas, told the police that the accused, pretending to be senior CBI inspector, had assured him of a government job through his contacts at higher levels and took Rs 45,000.
Another victim, Raj Kumar and his daughter gave Pandey Rs 4 lakh and a laptop. Kumar nephew paid Rs 40,000 for a job.
When police took Pandey into custody, he kept telling them different names when asked to identify himself. He kept giving them misleading information.
The police said investigations are on to find out how many people had been cheated by Pandey. They suspect there may be over a dozen people who had been duped in the city by the accused. A police source said Pandey had been in conning people since 2013, by continuously changing his area of operations.
